Pregnant Women in U.S. with Confirmed Zika Virus

To begin with, a virus is basically a microorganism that only reproduces inside a living cell. Viruses are microscopic, and practically invisible to the human eye.  The Zika virus has been all over the news because it has been quickly spreading throughout the Western Hemisphere.  This virus is a microorganism contracted from a bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito, which is a violent biter during the day. Zika infection can be passed from a pregnant woman to her unborn child, thus resulting in abnormal birth defects. Sex is supposedly another way through which the infection can be transmitted; however, it is yet to be endorsed. Apparently, there is neither a vaccine nor a cure for the disease.

The symptoms of Zika virus are generally reported as a fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis or red eyes. Muscle pains and headaches have also been termed as notable symptoms. The symptoms may last for several days or weeks. Zika infection can easily be detected when blood or urine test is conducted.

According to a recent report released by officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 234 expectant women in the U.S. were carrying the Zika virus in their systems. This particular strain was discovered to cause a distressing birth flaw known as microphaly among other severe defects to the child’s brain.  Currently, Zika is spreading at an alarming rate with expectant mothers becoming more vulnerable to contracting the virus.

Assuming that the present infection trend continues to trend upward, at least one in four people may turn out to be Zika victims in the near future. Since Zika lays ground for birth defects, there are many organizations taking serious measures to prevent the spread of Zika virus.  Pregnant women should avoid travelling to Zika prone areas.

The Zika virus sounds like a global pandemic about to claim more innocent lives if durable and effective pest control aimed at its prevention are not put in place. It’s upon each one of us to initiate procedures that will help curb the current condition that is endangering the lives of many innocent children. The team at Brezden Pest Control encourages pregnant women to consider the preventive measures outlined by the CDC.

To minimize the spread of this deadly virus, pest control inspections at your place of business and home will help rule out any potential Zika infestations. Pest inspection should be thoroughly conducted to disrupt all pest activities.  If you own a restaurant or a public place of business, consider seeking a commercial pest control inspection to discover and eliminate potential pest infestations.   Keep your home and office free of unwanted pests, and help us prevent the spread of the Zika virus.

Physical pest control

Physical pest control is a method of getting rid of insects and small rodents by removing, attacking, setting up barriers that will prevent further destruction of one's plants, or forcing insect infestations to become visual.

Elimination of breeding grounds

Proper waste management and drainage of still water, eliminates the breeding ground of many pests.

Garbage provides food and shelter for many unwanted organisms, as well as an area where still water might collect and be used as a breeding ground by mosquitoes. Communities that have proper garbage collection and disposal, have far less of a problem with rats, cockroaches, mosquitoes, flies and other pests than those that don't.

Open air sewers are ample breeding ground for various pests as well. By building and maintaining a proper sewer system, this problem is eliminated.

Certain spectrums of LED light can "disrupt insects’ breeding".

Poisoned bait
Poisoned bait is a common method for controlling rat populations, however is not as effective when there are other food sources around, such as garbage. Poisoned meats have been used for centuries for killing off wolves, birds that were seen to threaten crops, and against other creatures. This can be a problem, since a carcass which has been poisoned will kill not only the targeted animal, but also every other animal which feeds on the carcass. Humans have also been killed by coming in contact with poisoned meat, or by eating an animal which had fed on a poisoned carcass. This tool is also used to manage several caterpillars e.g. Spodoptera litura, fruit flies, snails and slugs, crabs etc.

Field burning

Traditionally, after a sugar cane harvest, the fields are all burned, to kill off any rodents, insects or eggs that might be in the fields.

Hunting
Historically, in some European countries, when stray dogs and cats became too numerous, local populations gathered together to round up all animals that did not appear to have an owner and kill them.[9] In some nations, teams of rat-catchers work at chasing rats from the field, and killing them with dogs and simple hand tools. Some communities have in the past employed a bounty system, where a town clerk will pay a set fee for every rat head brought in as proof of a rat killing.

Traps
A variety of mouse traps and rat traps are available for mice and rats, including snap traps, glue traps and live catch traps.

Pesticides

Spraying pesticides by planes, trucks or by hand is a common method of pest control. Crop dusters commonly fly over farmland and spray pesticides to kill off pests that would threaten the crops. However, some pesticides may cause cancer and other health problems, as well as harming wildlife.

Space fumigation

A project that involves a structure be covered or sealed airtight followed by the introduction of a penetrating, deadly gas at a killing concentration a long period of time (24-72hrs.). Although expensive, space fumigation targets all life stages of pests.

Space treatment

Residential & commercial building pest control service vehicle, Ypsilanti Township, Michigan
A long term project involving fogging or misting type applicators. Liquid insecticide is dispersed in the atmosphere within a structure. Treatments do not require the evacuation or airtight sealing of a building, allowing most work within the building to continue but at the cost of the penetrating effects. Contact insecticides are generally used, minimizing the long lasting residual effects. On August 10, 1973, the Federal Register printed the definition of Space treatment as defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

the dispersal of insecticides into the air by foggers, misters, aerosol devices or vapor dispensers for control of flying insects and exposed crawling insects
Sterilization

Laboratory studies conducted with U-5897 (3-chloro-1,2-propanediol) were attempted in the early 1970s although these proved unsuccessful.  Research into sterilization bait is ongoing.

In 2013, New York City tested sterilization traps in a $1.1 million study. The result was a 43% reduction in rat populations.  The Chicago Transit Authority plans to test sterilization control in spring 2015. The sterilization method doesn't poison the rats or humans.

Destruction of infected plants

Forest services sometimes destroy all the trees in an area where some are infected with insects, if seen as necessary to prevent the insect species from spreading. Farms infested with certain insects, have been burned entirely, to prevent the pest from spreading elsewhere.

Natural rodent control

Example of House mouse infestation
Several wildlife rehabilitation organizations encourage natural form of rodent control through exclusion and predator support and preventing secondary poisoning altogether.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency agrees, noting in its Proposed Risk Mitigation Decision for Nine Rodenticides that “without habitat modification to make areas less attractive to commensal rodents, even eradication will not prevent new populations from recolonizing the habitat.”

Repellents

Balsam fir oil from the tree Abies balsamea is an EPA approved non-toxic rodent repellent.
Acacia polyacantha subsp. campylacantha root emits chemical compounds that repel animals including crocodiles, snakes and rats.

Insect repellent Effectiveness

A test of various insect repellents by an independent consumer organization found that repellents containing DEET or picaridin are more effective than repellents with "natural" active ingredients. All the synthetics gave almost 100% repellency for the first 2 hours, where the natural repellent products were most effective for the first 30 to 60 minutes, and required reapplication to be effective over several hours.

Synthetic repellents tend to be more effective and/or longer lasting than "natural" repellents. In comparative studies, IR3535 was as effective or better than DEET in protection against mosquitoes. Other sources (official publications of the associations of German physicians as well as of German druggists suggest the contrary and state DEET is still the most efficient substance available and the substance of choice for stays in malaria regions, while IR3535 has little effect. However, some plant-based repellents may provide effective relief as well. Essential oil repellents can be short-lived in their effectiveness, since essential oils can evaporate completely.

For protection against mosquitos, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a statement in May 2008 recommending equally DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus and IR3535 for skin. Permethrin is recommended for clothing, gear, or bed nets. In an earlier report, the CDC found oil of lemon eucalyptus to be more effective than other plant-based treatments, with a similar effectiveness to low concentrations of DEET. However, a 2006 published study found in both cage and field studies that a product containing 40% oil of lemon eucalyptus was just as effective as products containing high concentrations of DEET. Research has also found that neem oil is mosquito repellent for up to 12 hours. Citronella oil's mosquito repellency has also been verified by research, including effectiveness in repelling Aedes aegypti, but requires reapplication after 30 to 60 minutes.

More recently, in 2015, Researchers at New Mexico State University tested 10 commercially available products for their effectiveness at repelling mosquitoes. On the mosquito Aedes aegypti, the vector of Zika virus, only one repellent that did not contain DEET had a strong effect for the duration of the 240 minutes test: a lemon eucalyptus oil repellent. All DEET-containing mosquito repellents were active.

There are also products available based on sound production, particularly ultrasound (inaudibly high frequency sounds) which purport to be insect repellents. However, these electronic devices have been shown to be ineffective based on studies done by the EPA and many universities.

Pest Control: Causes of Pests

Many pests have only become a problem as a result of the direct actions by humans. Modifying these actions can often substantially reduce the pest problem.

In the United States, raccoons caused a nuisance by tearing open refuse sacks. Many householders introduced bins with locking lids, which deterred the raccoons from visiting. House flies tend to accumulate wherever there is human activity and live in close association with people all over the world especially where food or food waste is exposed. Similarly, seagulls have become pests at many seaside resorts. Tourists would often feed the birds with scraps of fish and chips, and before long, the birds would rely on this food source and act aggressively towards humans.
Living organisms evolve and increase their resistance to biological, chemical, physical or any other form of control. Unless the target population is completely exterminated or is rendered incapable of reproduction, the surviving population will inevitably acquire a tolerance of whatever pressures are brought to bear - this results in an evolutionary arms race.

For Help with All Your Ant Control Problems

Pest control in San Luis Obispo, and in many parts of the Central Coast of California, should include treatment for ants. As one of the most common characters of the insect world, ants can be a problem inside and outside your home. There are a number of different types of ants and they range in color from yellow to black. To make sure you get rid of ants effectively their nests need to be destroyed. We are experts at finding and eliminating ant nests.
Ants are social creatures and it’s usually worker ants that enter your home in search of food. Keeping your home clean is a good way to discourage them from entering. Cleaning up after cooking, and putting away food promptly after use, are excellent ways to deter them from entering your home.
Ants are also attracted to sources of moisture so make sure you don’t have taps dripping or areas outside where you let water collect. Ants are also attracted to wood, especially rotting wood, which can provide the perfect spot for them to build a nest. Make sure you don’t have any piles of wood lying around outdoors and regularly check for signs of nesting under pots and between pavement cracks. To deter them from entering your home make sure all cracks and crevices are sealed.

Bat Control in San Luis Obispo

Controlling bats in San Luis Obispo, and other parts of the Central Coast of California, creates challenges for some homeowners. Bats congregate in large numbers outdoors, in attics, and in barns. In order to get rid of bats, you need to prevent them from being able to return to their roost spot.
At Brezden Pest Control, our experience has shown that the best way to do this is to put up netting to prevent re-entry. In this way, the bats are not harmed at all. They get a clear sign that their previous spot is no longer accessible and are forced to move along to find a new spot to hang out.
We make sure that the nets are left up for a week to ensure they do not return.Bat droppings can be a nuisance to get rid of and they can harbor many different kinds of toxic molds and fungi which release spores that lead to disease.
Droppings that are left can grow dangerous organisms and poisonous substances if neglected over a long term.Bat droppings can be responsible for histoplasmosis outbreaks in humans and animals. Their droppings can also attract flies and breed other diseases.
Additionally, bats are small and may bite out of fear. Therefore, it’s important to always be cautious around them.
The good news is that only 5% of bats have been proven to carry rabies. The bad news is that unless the offending bat is caught after the bite, painful treatment for rabies can’t be avoided.
